The Dakar Rally 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most demanding and diverse editions in modern rally-raid history. From 3 to 17 January, Saudi Arabia once again becomes the global arena for the world’s most extreme off-road challenge—this time with a massive 8,000-kilometre loop starting and finishing in Yanbu on the Red Sea coast.
With 4,900 km of special stages, two marathon-style “refuge bivouac” tests, and the longest stage ever held in Saudi Arabia, the 48th Dakar promises a mix of speed, survival, endurance and pure navigation chaos. The 2026 route is tougher, longer and more strategically complex than anything seen since the rally arrived in Saudi Arabia.

A Record Field for a Record Route
Before the engines even fire up, the numbers speak for themselves:
812 competitors in total
433 vehicles (118 motorbikes, 73 Ultimate cars, 46 trucks, 38 Challengers, 43 SSVs, 8 Stock)
97 Dakar Classic vehicles on a historic 7,348 km regularity route
69 nationalities represented
39 female competitors (including 19 in the Classic category)
Top nations: France (186), Spain (114), Italy (69)
As always, the spotlight falls on home hero Yazeed Al-Rajhi, who aims to defend his title on Saudi soil. But with this year’s course, nothing is guaranteed—not even for the reigning champion.

The Dakar Rally 2026 Route at a Glance – An 8,000 km Loop Across Saudi Arabia
The 2026 Dakar returns to a circular configuration: Yanbu to Yanbu. The opening images of the Red Sea surf next to the bivouac will mirror the final scene—two weeks and thousands of brutal kilometres later.
The route combines:
Fast gravel sections
Rocky technical zones
Endless dune fields
New “refuge” marathon stages
Navigation-heavy canyons
XXL endurance distances
The ingredients remain familiar, but the proportions have changed. 2026 is about balance, precision and survival.
Week 1: Yanbu – AlUla – Hail – Riyadh
The rally starts with a short prologue on 3 January before the action truly begins.
The early days take the competitors north into the majestic landscapes of AlUla. The terrain quickly transforms into a mix of black stone, canyons and sand that punishes both tyres and suspension. From there, the field heads toward Hail—long known as one of the technical strongholds of the Saudi desert.
The First Marathon: Stages 4 & 5
Mid-week, competitors face their first major test:a two-day marathon with an overnight stay in a stripped-down “refuge bivouac.”
No mechanics
Only help from fellow competitors
Limited spare parts
Extreme tyre management required
Pure Dakar DNA
This format forces teams to shift from attack mode to survival planning.
Stage 6 – The 925 km Monster
Just before the rest day, the Dakar delivers a knockout punch:Stage 6, the longest of the entire rally at 925 km total, including 525 km of timed special sections.
Expect towering dunes, deep sand corridors and the kind of fatigue that blurs decisions and destroys concentration.Completing this stage cleanly is almost a victory in itself.
The day ends in Riyadh, where the competitors enjoy their only moment of relief.
Rest Day in Riyadh – Calm Before the Storm
On 10 January, the rally pauses in Saudi Arabia’s capital.Rest, repairs, food and a few hours of proper sleep—everything the body needs before heading into an even more challenging second week.
Week 2: Riyadh – Wadi Ad-Dawasir – Bisha – Al Henakiyah – Yanbu
The return journey begins with a long run toward Wadi Ad-Dawasir, a region last visited in 2022 and famous for its rolling dune landscapes.
The Second Marathon: Stages 7 & 8
The rally throws another curveball immediately:
Another marathon stage
Again with a “refuge-style” bivouac
This time, separate routes for FIM and FIA competitors
No external assistance
Pure endurance and navigation
This is where the rally often breaks hearts—and engines.
Stage 11 – The Navigation Trap
The leg from Bisha to Al Henakiyah is already being called one of the hardest stages of the 2026 edition. It is packed with:
Complex canyons
Hidden tracks
Countless intersections
Tricky waypoints
High risk of getting lost
Many believe Stage 11 could define the final podium.
The Final Push: Return to Yanbu
More than 1,700 km still remain after Stage 11, including 762 km of special stages.Even the final day contains a competitive section—48 km that could flip a result or cement a victory.
Yanbu will reveal itself once more as the Red Sea appears on the horizon.Only then will the survivors of the 2026 Dakar truly know what they have endured.
Dakar Classic 2026 – A Record-Breaking Edition
The Classic field grows again, reaching 97 historic machines, including:
75 classic cars
24 classic trucks
Their 7,348 km route is the longest ever designed for the Dakar Classic, sharing camps and spirit with the main rally while following its own regularity-based challenges.

Mission 1000 & Next Gen – The Future of the Dakar
The Dakar continues to evolve:
Mission 1000 allows experimental vehicles to test new energy technologies
Saudi Next Gen brings local young talents directly into the Dakar world with real racing, real training, and real pressure
Both initiatives show the rally’s long-term vision: innovation, sustainability and new generations of competitors.
Conclusion: Dakar Rally 2026 Will Be Epic
With its balanced yet brutal route, dual marathon stages, the infamous 925-km stage, and the largest competitor field in years, the 2026 Dakar is set to be unforgettable.
It's not just a rally. It’s two weeks of survival. Two weeks of endurance. Two weeks of battling every grain of sand.
And only the strongest will see Yanbu again.
