Rebellion Spierings – When Motorsport Pedigree Meets Desert Ambition

There are teams that race the Dakar Rally. And then there are teams that live it, breathe it, and build an entire ecosystem around it. Rebellion Spierings – the Dutch-Swiss rally raid outfit led by Paul Spierings and Alexandre Pesci – is, according to everyone who has followed the Challenger class closely over the past two years, firmly in the second category.

At TimeOut Racing, we have spent over ten years in the rally raid world supporting teams and drivers at events including the Dakar Rally and Dakar Classic.

From that experience, we can say with confidence: Rebellion Spierings is a team worth knowing – especially if you are considering racing the Dakar 2027 in the Challenger class aboard one of the most successful UTV prototypes in the history of the event: the Taurus T3 Max.

Who Is Rebellion Spierings?

Rebellion Spierings is a Dutch-Swiss rally raid team formed by the merger of two distinct but complementary worlds. According to the team's own history, Paul Spierings is a Dutch entrepreneur and Dakar veteran who has lined up at the start of the world's toughest rally eight times – first on a motorcycle, then in SSV vehicles, and since 2024 in the Challenger category. Over the years he has built one of the most professional and well-organised privateer operations in the rally raid world, growing from a small team to a full operation of 25+ people including mechanics, a physiotherapist, a chef, and a dedicated media team.

Alexandre Pesci is the Swiss head of Rebellion Timepieces – the official watchmaker of the Dakar Rally – and the driving force behind Rebellion Racing. As documented in motorsport records, Rebellion Racing was previously a powerhouse in the FIA World Endurance Championship, winning six championships across LMP1 and LMP2 during the 2010s and claiming the LMP1-L class at the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans. After the WEC programme closed following the 2020 Le Mans 24 Hours, Pesci channelled Rebellion's competitive spirit into rally raid – and the Dakar became the new frontier.

Together, Spierings and Pesci have created something that is, in the words of Paul Spierings himself, "the ultimate package to bring someone to the finish and make their dreams come true" – a privateer team with factory-level organisation, race-winning machinery, and a genuine pathway for customer crews to compete at the highest level of rally raid alongside them.

The Taurus T3 Max – Why This Car Wins

At the heart of the Rebellion Spierings programme is the Taurus T3 Max. In simple terms: the Taurus T3 Max is a purpose-built FIA-homologated UTV prototype, developed by Wevers Sport and MCE-5 Development specifically for the Dakar Rally and the FIA World Rally Raid Championship. It competes in the T3 Challenger class – the FIA category for UTV prototypes that sits between the production-based T4 SSV class and the full T1 Ultimate prototype cars. According to Taurus, it is the lightest car in the Challenger category under race conditions, and its results confirm it is also the fastest and most reliable.

The numbers, as reported across multiple Dakar Rally editions, speak for themselves. In its very first Dakar appearance in 2023, a single Taurus T3 Max won five stages, stood on the podium seven times, and placed in the top seven on eleven of fourteen stages. In 2024, the Taurus finished first and second in the Challenger class at the Dakar Rally. At the Dakar 2025, Argentinians Nicolás Cavigliasso and Valentina Pertegarini won the Challenger class overall aboard a Taurus T3 Max, having taken an early lead by winning three of the first four stages. Red Bull has also fielded the Taurus in the Challenger class – underlining its status as the car of choice for serious competitors at the highest level.

Taurus T3 Max – Technical Specifications

The engineering behind the Taurus T3 Max is as impressive as its race results. According to Taurus and verified technical documentation, here is what sits underneath that carbon fibre body:

The engine is a Volkswagen 1.0-litre turbocharged TSI EA211 three-cylinder unit producing 177 horsepower – a remarkable output for a 1.0-litre engine, made possible by advanced turbocharging and direct injection. The engine is positioned at the rear of the vehicle, contributing to optimal weight distribution. Power is transmitted through a Sadev SC924 six-speed sequential gearbox – the same type of transmission used in serious rally raid and circuit race cars worldwide – allowing rapid, precise gear changes under full load.

The chassis is an FIA-approved chromoly steel space frame, combining high strength with low weight. The suspension is a double wishbone setup front and rear, with Reiger single-damper shock absorbers – a proven combination in cross-country rally that delivers the balance of compliance and control needed to navigate unpredictable desert terrain at speed. Total vehicle weight is 900 kilograms, making it the lightest car in the Challenger category under race conditions – a significant competitive advantage over longer events where mechanical stress compounds over thousands of kilometres.

The body is constructed from carbon fibre at the highest safety specification, and according to Taurus, the car is delivered complete and ready for FIA technical inspection, including a medical kit, emergency equipment, hydraulic jack, carbon spare parts, navigation connections, and camelback. There is nothing to add – the Taurus arrives ready to race.

Rebellion Spierings
Car #305 of Rebellion Spierings airborne through the mud – the Taurus T3 Max built for exactly these conditions.

The Taurus Evo Max – the evolved version raced by Rebellion Spierings at Dakar 2026 – builds on this foundation with enhanced aerodynamics, further weight reduction, a lower centre of gravity, increased cockpit comfort, and an Anti-Lag System for improved throttle response. It represents, according to Taurus, the current pinnacle of the T3 Challenger class.

What makes the Taurus so competitive beyond the raw specifications? According to Paul Spierings, who has raced it extensively across multiple events: "The car is an absolute joy to drive – great suspension travel and incredibly comfortable." That is not a trivial statement when you are racing up to 500 kilometres per day across some of the most hostile terrain on the planet. The combination of lightweight construction, proven powertrain reliability, and suspension tuned specifically for multi-day desert racing – not for outright speed on a single stage, but for the consistency and durability that wins rallies over fourteen stages and thousands of kilometres – is what separates the Taurus from its competitors.

What Rebellion Spierings Offers for Dakar 2027

What sets Rebellion Spierings apart from most privateer teams is the completeness of what they offer to customer crews. According to Paul Spierings, their model is a full fly & drive package – meaning a customer can arrive at the Dakar Rally 2027 knowing that every single aspect of their participation has been handled by a professional team with direct, multi-year Dakar experience.

This covers everything. Vehicle preparation to full race specification. Logistics and transport of car and equipment to Saudi Arabia. Bivouac support with experienced mechanics on hand after every stage. Spare parts management. Physiotherapy and physical support. A dedicated media and marketing team to document the experience. And – a detail that says a great deal about the team's culture – a five-star chef and a proper team dining setup in the bivouac, because performance at the Dakar Rally requires proper nutrition and recovery, not just fast stage times.

As reported by Motorsport.com following Dakar 2026, the team brought five cars and two assistance trucks to the start – with drivers including Paul Spierings, Alexandre Pesci, Alexandre Giroud, Dick van Culenborg, and Bruno Saby, the 1993 Dakar car category winner. At Dakar 2026, Rebellion Spierings scored multiple stage wins in the Challenger class. The stated goal for Dakar 2027, according to team partner NRF Group, is winning the Challenger category outright.

For someone who wants to race the Dakar 2027 in the Challenger class but does not want to spend months navigating the complexities of vehicle preparation, FIA homologation, Saudi logistics, and bivouac operations – Rebellion Spierings is, in the assessment of TimeOut Racing, the most complete customer programme currently available in the Challenger class.

The Challenger Class – What You Need to Know

The Dakar Rally Challenger class (T3) is, by definition, the FIA category for UTV prototypes at the Dakar Rally and World Rally Raid Championship events. It is contested by purpose-built two-seat off-road prototypes that are faster and more technically advanced than production-based T4 SSV vehicles, but operate within tighter regulations than the T1 Ultimate prototype cars. The class attracts serious privateer teams alongside factory-backed efforts, and the standard of competition has risen dramatically in recent years – largely driven by the dominance of the Taurus T3 Max.

For a driver with rally raid experience and the ambition to race at the very top of the privateer spectrum, the Challenger class aboard a Taurus T3 Max with the infrastructure of Rebellion Spierings behind them represents a genuinely world-class opportunity. You are racing the same car that has won stages and the overall Challenger classification at the Dakar, supported by a team that has competed in eight editions of the world's toughest rally, with the logistical resources to give every crew the best possible chance of reaching the finish in Dakar 2027.

Our View from TimeOut Racing

At TimeOut Racing, we know what a serious, well-run rally operation looks like. The combination of Paul Spierings' personal Dakar experience, the Rebellion brand's motorsport pedigree, and the proven performance of the Taurus T3 Max creates something that is genuinely rare in privateer rally raid: a customer programme where the infrastructure, the machinery, and the sporting ambition are all aligned at the highest level.

If you are looking for a team to take you to the start – and finish – of the Dakar 2027 in the Challenger class, Rebellion Spierings deserves your full attention.
