Why Is the Paris Dakar Rally No Longer in Africa?

For decades, the Paris-Dakar Rally was one of the most thrilling and grueling motorsport events in the world. Starting in 1978, it led competitors through the harshest African deserts, testing both man and machine. However, in 2008, the race in its original form came to an abrupt end.

Paris Dakar Rally, the Main Reasons for the Move

  1. Security Concerns In 2008, the rally was canceled due to terrorist threats in Mauritania. The increasing instability in parts of North and West Africa made it too dangerous to continue.

  2. Logistical and Political Challenges Organizing a multi-country rally across Africa became increasingly difficult. Border crossings, changing regulations, and diplomatic issues added complexity.

  3. A New Home in South America and Saudi Arabia In 2009, the rally found a new home in South America, offering stunning landscapes and challenging routes. Since 2020, it has been held in Saudi Arabia, continuing the Dakar spirit with vast deserts and extreme conditions.
